As I stepped inside, I was immediately welcomed by the warmth of the staff, which set the tone for the dining experience. While the ambiance can be described as modest, the buzzing energy and friendly service more than make up for it. The quick service allows you to focus on what truly matters — the food.
For those looking to dive deep into South Indian gastronomy, Chennai Spices excels in presenting traditional dishes with craftsmanship and care. The famed Dosa, an essential staple, was not just a dish but an experience in itself. The Ghee Masala Dosa came perfectly crisp and oozing with rich flavors. Accompanied by coconut chutney and spicy sambar, it was nothing short of perfection. My heart was stolen by a bowl of Idli and the crispy texture of Uzhunnu Vada, delivering that home-like taste many yearn for.
A standout dish that repeatedly captivated diners is the spicy Mutton Biryani. Each bite is a delightful explosion of spices, with juicy meat that melts in your mouth. This dish was crowned a favorite in many customer reviews, reinforcing its well-deserved acclaim. The Chicken Chettinad was another notable mention, rich in flavors typical of coastal South India, captivating my palate with its complexity.
Chennai Spices also offers a variety of thali options that are perfect for family-style dining. The non-veg thali paired with seeraga samba biriyani was a hit among families, showcasing generous portions that leave diners satisfied. Each plate not only reflects the rich flavors but also the culinary traditions of South India.
Despite minor critiques about the dining space, the food experience is unmistakably remarkable. The reasonable wait time for food is well compensated by the taste and quality of the dishes served, making it an excellent choice for takeout or casual dining. With its commitment to authenticity and flavor, Chennai Spices has established itself as a standout destination for anyone seeking an authentic taste of South India in Calgary.

We visited Chennai Spices a couple of weeks ago. The friendly staff and quick service make dining a good experience. South Indian traditional dishes as Idli, Dosa were authentic and Kid loved it as well. But The spicy Mutton Biryani is a hit, with juicy meat and tasty spices in every bite. For a delicious meal and friendly atmosphere, Chennai Spices is the place to be.

We recently had our lunch at Chennai Spices. Food was really good whole family loved it . We had a non veg thali & seeraga samba briyani combo which was great. People work there was great. Dosa comes with thali is a must try . Ambience was not that great but food is great & good place for takeaway. If someone wants to have South Indian food go for it . Right spot.

Went to Chennai Spices for dinner on Thursday. Ambience was ok, small space, and had to wait for 10-15 mins. Food was very authentic. Ordered chicken Chettinad, malabar paratha, idli and vada, and chicken 65 biriyani. Everything was very delicious. It seemed pricy at first, but generous portion.

Great food with authentic flavors and plenty of options! I tried the Thali and it was excellent. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Looking forward to visiting again!

As a South Indian myself, I have to say this location has nailed its taste factor for South Indian dishes, especially the vegetarian ones. It felt so good to have the Uzhunnu Vada (Medu Vada) and Ghee Masala Dosa. Poori was also nice. Price point is a tad bit higher than usual, but the taste justified it and therefore can’t really complain. The location is easy to find, right inside the Ranchlands complex. Highly recommend!!

We had a dosa live station at our wedding event, and it was a hit! The team was fast, efficient, and the dosas tasted amazing. Guests loved it—highly recommended!

Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. I’ve had both take out and dine in at both locations. By far the best Indian food in Calgary, and it’s nice that you get to try both North and South Indian food as they are very different. If hey make an error in your order they will more than compensate it for you. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone!

Such delicious food and very good service. Good way of handling customers from Osborn. We had dosa, vada ,kothu parotta , chicken 65 biryani and filter coffee was very tasty, felt like proper chennai taste. Would come here again and again. Must say again and again the taste was mouthwatering loved every bite of the taste
